Descripción del proyecto / Description of the project

Los agentes microscópicos que están en el aire son actores en la estructura de la ciudad. A pesar de su tamaño, su conjunto sí es percepcible para el ciudadano, y aún así el ayuntamiento a menudo afirma que el aire está limpio. Así pues, In the Air toma información recogida por varias estaciones colocadas por el propio ayuntamiento en todo el territorio de la ciudad de Madrid, y propone -con su herramienta digital- una visualización gráfica de las distintas partículas y gases.

Dicha visualización consiste en una topografía construida con mayas de colores, por medio de las cuales se puede navegar por la ciudad e identificar las diferencias entre distintos enclaves.

A partir de esa toma de conciencia, se quiere crear y engrosar una red de colaboradores que coloquen sensores de gases en sus casas y así aporten información alternativa a aquerlla facilitada por la administración pública

In the Air is a visualization project which aims to make visible the microscopic and invisible agents of Madrid´s air (gases, particles, pollen, diseases, etc), to see how they perform, react and interact with the rest of the city.

The visualization tool is a web-based dynamic model which builds up the space the components generate, where through data crossing behavior patterns emerge. The results of these data feed a physical prototype of what we have called a “diffuse façade”, a massive indicator of the air´s components through a changing cloud, blurring architecture with the atmosphere it has invaded and mediating the activity of the participants it envelops.

Project Goals

The project proposes a platform for individual and collective awareness and decision making, where the interpretation of results can be used for real time navigation through the city, opportunistic selection of locations according to their air conditions and a base for political action.

1. Describe the goal of the project in 3 sentences (which message do you want to carry? to whom?)

Develop an interactive tool by which the user can visualize the effects of his/her decisions and actions related to contamination. + develop an output for the digital screen, for passersby and users + develop a prototype for domestic sensors + increase research complexity of the aplication: maps, historicals, real time data, etc


2. What are the inspiring projects and theories; background, context, references

Bruno Latour´s theories on active non human agents. + ecomap san francisco for it´s interactivity with user and personal decision making visualization + mafia wars for it´s colaborative game, competition and increase or reduction of certain parameters


3. What is the short-term objective (what do you expect to finish in 2 weeks)?

Prototype for the interactive tool. Personal interaction and personal effects visualization. + passive output for the digital screen, for passersby and users + develop a prototype for domestic sensors + increase research complexity of the aplication: maps, historicals, real time data, etc


4. What is the long term objective (what posterior development do you think of)?

Interactive tool. collaborative interaction and competition. Collective effects visualization. + interactive output for the digital screen, for passersby and users + develop domestic sensors: production, usability, visualization..., and the insertion of those data into the aplication.


5. What are the data (status, where do they come from, who specifically owns the data?)

We need to insert real time data, provided by www.munimadrid.es + we already have historicals of 2008. + we need to produce our own data through the sensor prototype.


6. How will you convert data into some perceptual experience?

Already working mesh to visualize data. + interaction through the manipulation of the mesh + "translate" the mesh for the screen. We need to test from very basic 2d visualizations to the 3d mesh. + possible interactivity...


7. Do you have any assumptions or previous hypothesis?

There is a correlation between the urban fabric and contamination. We need to find other parameters already known as traffic and heating systems. + game and interaction increase the awareness towards a certain subject, and facilitate decision making. + information visualized in public space helps to increase social awareness towards a certain subject, and eventually facilitates to build up a certain comunity related to the subject.


Desarrollo / Development process

In the Air fue desarrollado en su primera fase durante la pasada edición de la plataforma Visualizar (Visualizar'08: Database City), dedicada a la visualización de datos relativos a entornos urbanos. En su desarrollo participaron como colaboradores Guillermo Ramirez, Carlota Pascual, Greg J. Smith, Victor Viña, Raphaël de Staël, Paco González, Miguel Vidal, Susanna Tesconi y Sandra Fernández.

En la presente edición de Visualizar (Visualizar'09: datos públicos, datos en público) se desarrollarán fundamentalmente las siguientes líneas de trabajo:

  • herramienta científica. Incorporación de nuevos datos de la ciudad y el clima. Datos en tiempo real, históricos, etc.
  • herramienta social. Fomento de la toma de decisiones mediante la creación de un juego. Visualización de los efectos de las acciones. Competencia. Consecuencias ciudadanas.
  • red de ciudades. Desarrollo de la aplicación para su aplicación en otras ciudades. Comparativas, plataforma, especificidad local.
  • producción de nuevos datos. Desarrollo de detectores para producir datos independientes e incorporación en la aplicación. Simultaneidad de datos dispares.
  • visualización exterior. Desarrollo de dispositivos de visualización exteriores. Alternativas a la “diffused facade”.

  • Junto a la información gráfica y textual aportada por la fachada digital, se quiere aportar una información más completa codificada en QR (Quick Response) a la que el ciudadano pueda acceder a través d eun dispositivo tecnológico de bolsillo.


Estado actual y seguimiento del proceso / Current status and next steps

Institutional

The prototype could be integrated into the entire facade of a building. At this scale multiple pollutants could be monitored and displayed at the same time, allowing for more complexity in the visualization.

The building would become a 24 hour active indicator of environmental conditions, blurring architecture with atmosphere, informing and mediating the bodies that come into contact with it.

Personal

A domestic version of the prototype will be developed. Assembly instructions will be posted on the web an each user will be able to make a unit for their balconies or windows. This will generate a distributed net of visualizations, representing the data collected troughout the city.

An individual can "tune" their unit to select the pollutant they are interested in tracking - this will allow for the construction of a collective map of personal environmental interests.
